016 - Disappearing Online, Reappearing in Reality
“Disappearing Online’ by Dall-E
In the age of algorithms, being visible is the default. Every scroll, every click, every “like” is a breadcrumb feeding the machine. But what happens when you flip the switch and vanish? I’ve been pruning. Facebook and Instagram, gone. X profile, gone. Handshake, gone. LinkedIn, gone, too, for now. The feed, the dopamine loop, the endless noise; all muted. The digital self has gone dark, but not out. There’s a strange freedom in absence. No endless pings about opportunities that weren’t opportunities. No competing in the game of impressions and clicks. No algorithm telling me what’s “trending” or what I should want. Instead, the focus shifts back to the craft: music, engineering, building, experimenting, creating things worth existing beyond a feed refresh.
But this isn’t about running away. It’s about reappearing with intent. The website you’re reading right now is my anchor. Not a profile picture on borrowed real estate, not another entry in someone else’s database. My corner of the internet. Mine. The irony is that disappearance itself attracts eyes. People are so used to the constant scroll that silence feels like rebellion. In an online world that rewards noise, stillness is radical.
So, if you’re here, consider this: What parts of your digital life deserve pruning? What would your signal look like if you cut away the static? Sometimes the loudest statement you can make is simply not being there.
I thought about signing this, and I realized that I also have a cool email signature I could paste here. Perhaps, there are links within that might be interesting here as a conclusion? See below for some of that. As I sit at my desk with multiple screens at 6:00 AM, and up early from a full night’s sleep (rather a 180-degree turn from my younger years), listening to some Yoni Charis prior to tapping into Sunday sermons that I am used to listening to weekly, I am reminded that, on this walk with God, remember to enjoy each moment of the process as much of what you are praying for today will come to fruition, sometimes sooner than you envisioned.
