There are people we meet, and there are people whose stories become part of our own journey, even if we never had the opportunity to know them as we wish we could have. Marcie is one of those people for me. As I get closer to the end of The Journey to 124, I have been thinking less about accomplishments and more about people. Marcie was the daughter of Elizabeth Gerald, who many in my inner circle know today as U.S. Masi. She was an honor student, a young woman with intelligence, dreams, promise, and an entire future ahead of her. Then she became the victim of a senseless act of sexual violence in Chicago. I do not want to make the details of what happened to Marcie the center of this story because violence already took enough from her. In the aftermath of what she endured, Marcie eventually died by suicide. There is no paragraph I can write that makes that loss easier, and there is no way for someone standing outside that experience to understand what Elizabeth endured as her mother fully.

But somehow, the story did not end there. Elizabeth took grief that could have remained private and transformed it into service. She chose to make Marcie's name mean something beyond what happened to her, and that purpose became part of the MJG Movement. That is how Marcie has been with me on this journey. Through Elizabeth, through the movement bearing her initials, through conversations, through service, and through the reminder that our lives can affect people we may never meet. Throughout these 121 posts, I have written about building companies, making music, earning degrees, faith, artificial intelligence, space debris, family, disappointment, perseverance, and trying to understand what my own assignment might be. But accomplishments eventually become dates on a résumé. People become stories, and stories can travel much farther. Marcie's story traveled far enough to reach me.

I have watched Elizabeth carry something incredibly painful and use it to advocate for something larger than herself. She became U.S. Masi, but the title is not what impresses me most. It is what the title represents: service, responsibility, showing up, and refusing to allow darkness to have the final word. That does not erase what happened, nor does it make tragedy acceptable. It means that Marcie can be remembered for more than the worst thing that happened to her. Too often, when we hear stories involving violence and loss, the person slowly disappears from the story. We remember what happened and forget who it happened to. I don't want to do that with Marcie. I want to remember the honor student, the daughter, the young woman who had dreams, and all the possibilities that should have been hers. I also want to recognize a mother who decided that her daughter's name would continue moving through this world attached not only to tragedy, but also to purpose.

Some teach us, challenge us, pray for us, or remind us why the work matters. And sometimes someone we never personally knew can still leave fingerprints on the road we travel. Marcie has been part of mine. So before I reach 124, I wanted her name written here. Not as a statistic and not simply as a victim, but as Marcie: a daughter, an honor student, a young woman with promise, and a life that mattered. Through Elizabeth and the MJG Movement, her name continues to inspire service and purpose. That is why Marcie belongs in The Journey to 124. Some stories deserve to keep moving. Marcie's is one of them. 🕊️
