Some careers follow a straight line. Mani Miglani's never has.

Over the past three decades, his journey has taken him from Chicago's underground electronic music scene to entrepreneurship, engineering, artificial intelligence, wellness, and interdisciplinary research. Along the way, he has built a career as a DJ, music producer, MC, entrepreneur, engineer, educator, and lifelong student, continually exploring new ideas while remaining grounded in one enduring passion: creating meaningful experiences that bring people together.

What connects these seemingly different paths is a deep curiosity about how creativity, technology, and human potential intersect. Whether performing as DJ Mani Midi, designing intelligent systems, building companies, or leading research through WeR&D and MaNiverse, Mani has always been driven by the same question:

How can we create something that leaves people, and the world, better than we found it?

The Early Years

Born in India and raised in the suburbs of Chicago after moving to the United States at the age of two, Mani grew up between cultures, a perspective that quietly shaped the way he would approach both life and work.

While attending the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, he discovered Chicago's thriving electronic music scene. What began as curiosity quickly became a passion, immersing him in a community built on creativity, experimentation, and collaboration.

After graduating, Mani joined Gramaphone Records, one of Chicago's most influential institutions in electronic music. There, he combined his interests in music and technology by helping launch one of the industry's earliest online music stores. Drawing on graduate studies in E-Commerce at DePaul University, he implemented recommendation-based shopping years before personalized online experiences became standard.

Looking back, these early years established a pattern that would define his career: whenever a new technology emerged, Mani wanted to understand it; whenever a new creative challenge appeared, he wanted to build it.

Building Chicago's Techno Scene

Working at Gramaphone Records placed Mani at the center of Chicago's electronic music movement during one of its most exciting periods.

His curiosity soon expanded beyond DJing into artist development, event production, and community building. He founded EAR DJs (Emissary Audio Response), representing 33 internationally recognized techno and house artists while helping connect emerging talent with audiences throughout Chicago.

His first residency at Big Wig, later Evil Olive, became the launching point for a much larger vision. Together with collaborators, Mani co-founded the Gramaphone Techno Showcases, a series that grew into one of Chicago's defining underground techno events.

Over five years, the showcases introduced many internationally acclaimed artists, including Surgeon, Steve Rachmad, Steve Bug, and Rino Cerrone, to Chicago audiences while creating meaningful opportunities for local DJs to perform alongside them.

More than a promoter, Mani became a builder of communities, helping strengthen a scene that continues to influence electronic music around the world.

Becoming a Producer

Eventually, playing other people's music wasn't enough.

Mani wanted to understand how music was created.

Beginning with the AKAI MPC 2000 and Roland MC-505 Groovebox, he immersed himself in music production before moving into Steinberg's Cubase VST. His first vinyl release followed through Smartbar and The Onion's Area DJ Series.

Always drawn to emerging technology, Mani became an early adopter of Ableton Live. In 2003, he made his live debut using Ableton Live 1.0 at Chicago's legendary Metro concert hall under unexpected circumstances: two international headliners had been delayed overseas, leaving a packed venue waiting.

Rather than shrinking from the moment, Mani delivered a breakthrough performance that launched the next chapter of his career.

He later toured performing Live PAs (and DJ Sets) alongside British electronic pioneer The Advent, establishing himself as an early advocate of live electronic performance years before hybrid live sets became commonplace.

In 2004, he closed EAR DJs to focus fully on his own artistic path, a decision that reflected a pattern that would continue throughout his career: once he mastered one discipline, curiosity led him toward the next.

Music Beyond the DJ Booth

Performing as Mani Midi, Mani expanded beyond traditional DJing into live electronic performance, original productions, and immersive musical storytelling.

His releases, including 1st.Contact (2018) and 2nd.Birth (2019), reached audiences worldwide, while performances took him to clubs and festivals across the globe, including the official after-hours celebration of the Nobel Peace Prize Concert in Oslo, Norway.

His long-running Tha Werd Sessions on Mixcloud document his evolution as both a DJ and storyteller, reflecting his belief that every performance should create an experience rather than simply play music.

For Mani, music has always been more than entertainment. It is a language capable of connecting people across cultures and creating meaningful shared experiences.

MM Dot, Tha Werd & The Birth of WeR&D

Around 2005, during a transformative period in his life, Mani found another creative voice through hip-hop.

Inspired by the lyrical craftsmanship of Jay-Z, he began exploring rap and spoken word as vehicles for reflection, resilience, and personal growth.

That journey gave birth to Tha Werd, intentionally embedding "We" within the name to symbolize collaboration, creativity, and collective growth.

Years later, that philosophy would evolve into WeR&D.

During the pandemic, Mani committed to a disciplined writing practice, recording more than 250 original rap performances through the Bars App. The strongest of those works became the From Crawling to Rhyming mixtape, a celebration of consistency, creativity, and the belief that mastery is earned one step at a time.

What began as a music movement gradually became something much larger: a philosophy built around collaboration, lifelong learning, and the power of connecting ideas across disciplines.

Beyond Music

While music remained the constant, Mani's career expanded across technology, renewable energy, aerospace, entrepreneurship, and wellness.

As an entrepreneur, he worked internationally in the renewable energy and aerospace industries, collaborating on projects that took him around the world. These experiences broadened his understanding of innovation, global business, engineering, and complex systems while reinforcing a belief that the world's greatest breakthroughs often emerge where disciplines intersect.

Alongside his entrepreneurial work, Mani continued pursuing lifelong learning, eventually becoming a certified Ayurvedic Health Practitioner through New World Ayurveda. Rather than viewing technology and wellness as separate worlds, he came to see them as complementary approaches to improving human life.

Together with his wife, Nisha, he co-founded the Nirmal Usha Foundation, dedicated to advancing consciousness through education, music, media, and holistic wellness. They later founded MaNiverse Inc., an interdisciplinary company where creativity, technology, artificial intelligence, and systems thinking converge to develop solutions for the future.

WeR&D, Artificial Intelligence & Innovation

Today, Mani's multidisciplinary journey finds its fullest expression through WeR&D, an interdisciplinary research and innovation institute born from the collaborative philosophy of Tha Werd.

Drawing from decades of experience across music, entrepreneurship, engineering, artificial intelligence, systems thinking, and human-centered design, WeR&D explores how knowledge from seemingly unrelated disciplines can be synthesized to solve complex global challenges.

Driven by that vision, Mani returned to the University of Illinois, Chicago to pursue a Master's in Engineering specializing in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, combining formal engineering with more than two decades of creative and entrepreneurial experience.

Today, WeR&D serves as the research and innovation engine behind initiatives including AETHR Health Intelligence, an AI-powered platform commercializing human health intelligence engine, and Clean It Up (CIU), an orbital intelligence initiative supporting the long-term sustainability of Earth's space environment. Together, these projects reflect a broader mission: transforming knowledge into technologies that improve life on Earth and beyond.

A Lifelong Journey

Looking back, the thread connecting Mani's career has never been a single profession.

It has been curiosity.

Every chapter has been an opportunity to explore new ideas, connect disciplines that rarely meet, and transform those insights into music, technologies, businesses, and communities that serve others.

Whether performing on stage, building intelligent systems, mentoring entrepreneurs, or exploring the future of artificial intelligence, Mani continues to believe that the most meaningful discoveries happen where creativity, technology, and human potential intersect.

For Mani, the future has never belonged to a single discipline. It belongs to the connections between them.
