090 - Time Today 🏁

“Time Today” (GPT5.5 Render)

When I first got to Houston, I met a Texas homie named G Money. Funny how life works. He had just come home after a 12-year bid and was released on April 12th. My birthday also carries a 12 in it, so something about that sat with me deeply. I felt like God put him in my path for a reason. Despite having bald tires and every reason to stay put, I drove downtown that night to help the homie however I could. We rode around Houston talking about life, prison, survival, music, and the reality of rebuilding after the world keeps moving while you are gone. We even crossed paths with DJ Malone that night, which somehow made the whole experience feel even more “Houston.” At one point during the drive, I asked him who his favorite hip-hop artist was. Without hesitation, he said Moneybagg Yo. That sent me down a rabbit hole into his music and eventually to “Time Today,” which hit differently after hearing G Money’s story and the lessons he carried with him after losing 12 years of freedom.

What stayed with me most, though, were the three lessons he said prison taught him:

  • Mind your business.

  • Show respect.

  • Be humble.

Simple. Heavy. Real. Those words stuck with me because most people complicate life trying to impress people who do not even care if they survive. Meanwhile, a man who lost over a decade of freedom reduced survival down to three principles. As we drove through Houston that night, Nipsey Hussle’s “Status Symbol 3” came on. “Almost forgot what I was doin’… almost forgot where I was goin’…” That line hit different sitting beside somebody trying to figure life out again in real time after a 12-year bid. The whole ride felt surreal. Houston lights. Late-night energy. A Latino homie in a hoodie with face tattoos talking about humility and respect more honestly than most executives, influencers, or fake spiritual people online ever could.

That Nipsey record became part of the memory now. Not because it sounded good. Because it captured the exact feeling of that night: reflection, survival, purpose, and realizing time is too valuable to waste on distractions, nonsense, or people who do not believe in you. I remember thinking afterward that had I not met homie, I may not have realized I truly did not have “time today” for negativity, fake support, empty opinions, or people waiting for proof before they decide to believe in somebody. Sometimes wisdom does not come from boardrooms, podcasts, or people pretending to be enlightened online. Sometimes it comes from a tired man fresh out of prison trying to navigate Houston streets again. And sometimes God sends people into your life not so you can save them, but so they can remind you who you are becoming.

For those unfamiliar, Moneybagg Yo came out of Memphis with music rooted in survival, loyalty, pressure, consequences, ambition, and moving carefully once success arrives. His records resonate because underneath the flexing is somebody talking about boundaries, focus, pain, and protecting energy, once you realize everybody cannot come with you into the next chapter. That Houston drive reminded me of something important: protect your energy, move with respect, stay humble, and understand not everybody deserves your time today.
