Some organizations begin with a business plan. The Nirmal Usha Foundation began with two mothers. My mother, Nirmal Miglani, came to the United States during a nursing shortage in 1974. After losing her first son as a baby in India, she made another unimaginable sacrifice by temporarily leaving her second son with her husband while she crossed an ocean to build a future for her family. She eventually became a CCU and ICU charge nurse, spending her career caring for people during the most critical moments of their lives. She did not merely work in healthcare. She was a healer who walked toward emergencies when everyone else wanted to escape them.

Years later, while helping another nurse restrain a critically ill patient following a motorcycle accident, my mother and that other nurse experienced an accidental needlestick. The patient had several substances in his system after attending a party, similar to some of the parties I once threw without ever thinking about the medical professionals who might be called upon when something went wrong. My mother contracted hepatitis following that exposure, which eventually contributed to liver failure. She received a liver transplant and accepted the extraordinary gift of another chance at life, but during what was expected to be a routine colostomy reversal, she left this plane. She endured more than most people ever knew, yet she continued to embody strength, service, and compassion.

In Loving Memory of Nirmal and Usha

Nishaโ€™s mother, Usha Joshi, traveled a different road, but her story also revealed how narrow the distance can be between intervention and irreversible loss. Usha suffered a stroke, and the critical window for administering the clot-busting treatment was missed. She had to be transported by helicopter for advanced neurological care, where my first cousin, Ashish, was the neurologist involved in her treatment. I remember one of his colleagues telling him that many of his patients passed away. It was a sobering reminder of the burden carried by those who work where life and death meet every day. Usha passed away five days after her stroke.

Nirmal and Usha came from different families and lived different lives, but their stories eventually became joined through Nisha and me. Their experiences taught us about the importance of timing, prevention, information, and compassionate care. That is why we created the Nirmal Usha Foundation, not simply as a memorial, but as a commitment to carry their compassion forward. Their journeys also helped lead Nisha and me to become Ayurvedic practitioners. We respect modern medicine, a system my mother devoted her life to and one that gave her more time through organ transplantation. Ayurveda expanded our understanding by encouraging us to consider prevention, balance, daily behavior, and the signals the body may give before a crisis becomes impossible to ignore.

That path eventually led us to Aethr Health Intelligence and the belief that better information, understood earlier, can help people make better decisions about their health. Technology should never replace physicians, nurses, or human judgment, but it can help identify meaningful patterns sooner and give families more knowledge, more options, and, whenever possible, more time. Nirmal means pure, and Usha means dawn. Purity and dawn are now joined in the name of a foundation and in the work Nisha and I continue to build. The Nirmal Usha Foundation honors where we came from, Ayurveda helped shape the path we chose, and Aethr represents where that path may lead. Their stories did not end with loss. They became part of the assignment. ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ
